Brad Lightcap, OpenAI’s executive who built its commercial operations, is leaving the company after nearly ten years to launch a new venture. Lightcap announced his departure on August 11, 2026. He joined OpenAI in 2018 from Y Combinator, where he worked as an investor, and was the organization’s first dedicated business hire. He built OpenAI’s go-to-market operation, took on the CFO role, and eventually became COO, overseeing major partnerships and the OpenAI Startup Fund. In April 2026, he moved out of the COO seat into a special-projects role focused on complex deals and investments, reporting directly to Sam Altman. The reshuffle coincided with broader leadership changes, including AGI development CEO Fidji Simo and Chief Marketing Officer Kate Rouch both taking personal medical leaves around the same time. What Lightcap is building next has not been disclosed beyond the broad description of starting something new.
