Meta’s privacy protection feature for its 2nd generation Ray-Ban Meta AI Glasses can be bypassed by a sticker costing about $1.42 each, according to a July 31 experiment by IT media outlet Engadget. Engadget attached a sticker purchased from TikTok Shop to the glasses, which made the recording LED barely visible from the outside while the camera continued to function normally. The stickers, also available on Amazon, have a tiny hole over the LED area, allowing external light to reach the sensor while hiding the indicator. Engadget purchased 12 stickers and tweezers for $16.99 for the experiment. A clip-on cover for the Oakley Meta Vanguard also made the recording indicator completely invisible. Meta’s software update, which stops the camera if the LED is fully blocked, does not detect this sensor-tricking method. Meta stated that using products bypassing built-in security features is a policy violation, and it will strengthen technology to detect unauthorized usage and stop the camera. Meta is immediately removing ads, posts, and sales listings promoting LED manipulation, and warned that accounts will be suspended for invading privacy with modified glasses.
