Tamil Nadu’s revised budget for 2026-27, presented by State Finance Minister N Marie Wilson on August 5, focuses on artificial intelligence, digital skills, and Gen Z initiatives. The budget outlines a roadmap for the state to become a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036. It proposes India's first dedicated AI and Innovation City, 'Arivagam', which would include an AI university, semiconductor testing lab, innovation incubators, and skill development centres, with a feasibility study estimated at Rs 5 crore. An AI Industry Development Programme aims to train five lakh students across engineering colleges, polytechnics, and Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) by 2031, in partnership with institutions including IIT Madras. An expert committee will develop specialised AI curricula for higher education. The budget also includes a Rs 2,000-crore laptop scheme and industry-led skilling initiatives to prepare youth for technology-driven jobs.
