Autodesk Flow Studio, an AI studio favored by Hollywood, is launching a set of tools on Tuesday that it says gives directors new control over AI-generated shots. The product, a combo package called 3D Editor + Canvas, adds 3D shooting and editing to prompt-based images, combining typical 2D AI generation with the 3D CG world. The system has two parts: Canvas uses a broad set of AI models similar to tools from Luma, OpenArt, and Runway, while the 3D editor adds an element usually reserved for postproduction tools like Unreal Engine. This allows an AI filmmaker to manipulate images in a 360-degree way, rather than prompting a scene and hoping elements like point-of-view and depth align with their vision. Co-founder Nikola Todorovic, whose company was previously known as Wonder Dynamics, said AI models are focused on 2D, but filmmakers want to control things in 3D to be precise. The program aims to solve a main problem with AI filmmaking: creating 3D scenes without breaking out of the 2D confines of a laptop. Todorovic demonstrated use cases including dropping an AI-generated character into an existing world and shaping an environment around an existing character. He envisions actors moving around an empty space that can be dropped into far-flung settings, a process known by some as “performance transfer.” AI filmmaking has faced challenges including the roulette-like nature of shots and an uncanny
