A new analysis by Kapwing, a video editing software company, found that 59% of content on a new TikTok account's For You Page was AI-generated "slop," defined as "careless, low-quality content generated using automatic computer applications and distributed to farm views and subscriptions or sway political opinion." The report analyzed thousands of TikTok videos with kid-targeted hashtags, classifying more than half as AI slop. The category with the highest slop density was Kids at 57.4%, based on a sample of 10,742 videos across popular tags in 20 categories. Other categories with high slop density included Science and Education (35.0%), Health (33.8%), and History (33.5%), while Fitness (1.6%), Music (1.5%), and Fashion (1.3%) were almost entirely human-made. AI-generated content was particularly prevalent on hashtags like #nurseryrhymes or #kidscartoons. Some videos carried a TikTok label reading "Contains AI-generated media," but the report noted that young children cannot read such labels.
