Google's Search Volume Is About 5x ChatGPT's, OpenAI Says

ChatGPT receives roughly one-fifth as many search-like queries as Google, according to ChatGPT consumer product lead Adam Fry, who shared the point with Alex Kantrowitz during an open discussion at a Monday evening dinner in New York hosted by OpenAI, with the transcript later posted by Big Technology on Tuesday. Fry said OpenAI counts a search each time a question sends ChatGPT to the web, and that visits ChatGPT sends to websites are a separate measure. He said people first came to ChatGPT mostly for writing and coding help, and over the past year brought questions about people, places and things needing up-to-date information, plus finance and health questions, where ChatGPT does a web search. Fry did not reveal which Google figure was referenced, how long the comparison is based on, or which regions are covered. The Big Technology report indicates ChatGPT's weekly active users grew by 20% (from 1 billion to 1.2 billion) over the last two months. In February, Ahrefs estimated ChatGPT's search volume at around 12 percent of Google's using a different definition of search, and in October, across 118,671 sites, Google accounted for 24.74% of tracked traffic and ChatGPT for 0.36%, according to the tracker's Nov. 3 update.
