Nvidia has reportedly invested $5 billion in Safe Superintelligence (SSI), the AI laboratory founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, after receiving rare access to its closely guarded research. The investment gives SSI access to Nvidia’s forthcoming Vera Rubin computing platform and enough hardware to increase its available compute tenfold. SSI has spent two years publishing no model, selling no product, and disclosing almost no research, with its website stating it exists with “one goal and one product: a safe superintelligence.” During a recent Invest Like the Best podcast appearance, Atreides Management founder Gavin Baker said that “SSI says that they’ll come out with their model in August,” though SSI has not confirmed the claim or disclosed what form such a model might take. Sutskever, a mathematics graduate of the University of Toronto who completed his PhD under Geoffrey Hinton, co-developed AlexNet in 2012 with Hinton and Alex Krizhevsky, a neural network trained using just two GPUs that helped establish deep learning as the dominant AI paradigm. He later worked at Google Brain and co-authored the landmark 2014 sequence-to-sequence paper with Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le.
