The Salamanca City Central School District announced in a Facebook post on July 24, 2026 that its pilot project with tech company Realbotix has been put on hold. The district in Cattaraugus County had planned to place a female-appearing robot named Sally, with silicone skin, long brown hair and a moving upper body, in a high school classroom to interact with students and provide educational assistance powered by a proprietary AI platform. The robot was to be part of the district’s AI and robotics courses, which seek to prepare students for jobs in the burgeoning tech field. After the district tried and failed to introduce the robotic “teacher” driven by artificial generative intelligence, the state teachers union is calling on officials to enact an enforceable set of rules across all of New York’s public schools on the use of the new technology.
