Tilly Norwood, described by her creators as the world’s first AI actress, gave an interview with Piers Morgan and British actor Tom Conti during which she suddenly switched from English to Chinese. The glitch occurred in response to Conti’s question about whether the other cast members in her debut film Misaligned were humans or digital characters. Norwood initially answered in English, switched to Chinese for a few seconds mid-response, then returned to English. Morgan pointed out the glitch, and Norwood attributed it to a technical error, saying her “wires got a little bit crossed.” Norwood was created by the London companies Particle6 and its AI division, Xicoia. The character debuted at the Zurich Film Festival in 2025 and landed a role in Misaligned, a film about an artificial being that develops human desires under the influence of an out-of-control bot. Her emergence has drawn criticism from the SAG-AFTRA union, which said a digital character is not an actor because it was created using a computer program trained on the work of professional performers without their consent or compensation. Actress Emily Blunt urged talent agencies not to work with the project.
