In a recent interview, OpenAI president Greg Brockman acknowledged that the merged ChatGPT and Codex desktop app’s new user interface “is kind of a mess,” agreeing with Joanna Stern’s characterization. The app, which introduced a new agentic mode called Work, initially confused users who struggled to find their chat history. OpenAI later added separate Work and Chat tabs and a drop-down menu for switching between ChatGPT and Codex. Brockman described the current state as “incremental progress towards the future,” stating that by “end of year, there should be no Work tab” and its functionality will “seamlessly mold into ChatGPT.” Despite the confusing rollout, Brockman noted that Codex went from 5 to 10 million users in just a few days, attributing the growth partly to the merger and the goal of bringing agents to mass consumer scale.
