OpenAI is shutting down its Atlas browser but folding its AI browsing features into ChatGPT's desktop app and a new Chrome extension instead. The company is sunsetting Atlas, the AI-powered browser it launched back in October. OpenAI is redistributing the agentic browsing capabilities it tested in Atlas across ChatGPT’s desktop app and a new Google Chrome extension. This decision follows a few months after Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of applications, told the team internally to cut back on what she called “side quests," the same directive that led OpenAI to shut down Sora, its AI video generation tool, earlier this year. OpenAI is launching a ChatGPT extension for Chrome that gives it direct access to the context of whatever page you’re currently viewing, allowing users to ask questions about a webpage, get quick summaries of content, or kick off longer, more complex tasks. This puts it in direct competition with Google’s own Gemini Side Panel. OpenAI is also upgrading its ChatGPT desktop app with a much more capable built.
