A group of Michigan State University students developed Pass for Patient, a healthcare app that functions like a dating platform to help users find doctors based on medical needs, insurance, location, and appointment availability. The app was created during Advancing AI Literacy and Workforce Readiness, a weeklong immersive experience at the Apple Developer Academy with MSU and the Gilbert Family Foundation in Detroit. Supported by an AI-Ready Spartans: Education Innovation Grant, the pilot program combined app development, design, and business with artificial intelligence. Approximately 25 students from various majors explored AI-assisted coding and app development, working in teams to create solutions for real-world issues. Apple Developer Academy Director Sarah Gretter said students learn AI-assisted coding and app development to address community challenges. An interdisciplinary review committee of more than 20 faculty and staff reviewed 38 proposals, and funding recommendations were approved by Marcio Oliveira, vice provost for academic innovation, and Sanjay Gupta, co-chair of the Green and White Council. They selected 18 proposals amounting to more than $506,000 for initiatives focused on effective, responsible, and creative AI use. The program is one of the first grant-funded projects to launch in 2026. Students who completed the program and earned a certificate came from majors including journalism, communications, and experience architecture.
