Copenhagen-based Danske Bank and Mastercard have completed Denmark's first payment made by an AI agent, in which a consumer instructed an AI agent to book a coffee tasting session through Mastercard's experiences platform, Priceless.com, and the booking and payment were completed autonomously by the agent using a Mastercard issued by the Danish lender. The transaction utilised Mastercard's agentic AI payment infrastructure, Agent Pay, with support from Mastercard's agentic commerce partner PayOS, which orchestrated the end-to-end transaction flow. This marks Mastercard's latest agentic AI development in Europe following Agent Pay's launch in April 2025; in March the company conducted the continent's first live AI agent payment with Santander, followed by the first such payment in France four months later in partnership with Worldline and Crédit Agricole. Erik Gutwasser, Mastercard's president for Northern Europe, said trust and security must come first, and Agent Pay secures every purchase through Mastercard Payment Passkeys, keeping AI-powered transactions transparent, securely authenticated and under the consumer's control while giving card issuers greater visibility into AI-initiated transactions. For Danske Bank, the trial comes shortly after it extended its partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to strengthen its AI-powered banking solutions and products, implementing Amazon Bedrock and Amazon Bedrock AgentCore.
