New humanoids break from the two-legged mold

A horned, chainsaw-wielding machine named Threehalves, developed by Satyress Robotics, a startup based in Auburn, California, went viral online this week, signaling a shift away from the traditional two-legged humanoid form. The robot grafts a humanoid upper body onto a four-legged base, stands about two meters tall, and is designed for dangerous environments like wildfire fronts and collapsed structures. The company positions it as a force multiplier for skilled workers, and it is teleoperated, though not yet a functioning robot—the circulating images are static renders. The design echoes "Centaur," South Korea's first humanoid built at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST). Chipmaker Nvidia defines humanoids as general-purpose, bipedal robots, but many marketed as such stray from that description. Park Dong-il, director of the Advanced Robotics Research Center at KIST, noted the definition of "humanoid" is unclear, with no ISO standard. Google DeepMind unveiled Gemini Robotics 2, a general-purpose AI model that steers a humanoid's whole body. South Korea's Robotis open-sourced its AI Sapiens humanoid platform. Samsung affiliate Rainbow Robotics and Hyundai Rotem developed the RB-01K, a four-legged combat robot set for deployment with the South Korean Army by year-end. Four-legged machines rely on the same quasi-direct-drive actuators pioneered in MIT's Cheetah robots, now used in humanoids.
