Google has silently shelved its Gemini 3.5 Pro model, according to a new institutional note by Semi Analysis, which says the company is pivoting to hype around Gemini 4 to cover the gap. At Google I/O in May, CEO Sundar Pichai announced Gemini 3.5 Pro was coming, but Google released Gemini 3.5 Flash that day instead, with Pichai saying the bigger model would arrive “next month.” June passed with no Pro model, and in July Google retrained Gemini on updated data to fix coding performance. When that fell short, the company shipped Gemini 3.6 Flash on July 21 as a stopgap alongside Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite and a Flash Cyber variant. Gemini 3.6 Flash used around 17 percent fewer output tokens than its predecessor and beat it on benchmarks like DeepSWE, OSWorld-Verified, and MLE-Bench, but independent testing from Artificial Analysis gave it the same Intelligence Index score as Gemini 3.5 Flash. The report says Gemini currently sits in eighth place in the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, trailing Muse Spark 1.2, Grok 4.5, and top-tier Chinese open-source labs. Gemini 3.5 Pro has surfaced on Arena a few times over recent weeks, briefly appearing in blind testing pools before being pulled, in one case after less than an hour, but testers reported responses that felt incremental rather than a generational leap.
