Sam Altman’s OpenAI has been working on launching its first hardware device after the success of ChatGPT, having acquired former Apple Inc. design chief Jony Ive’s AI hardware startup io Products. Prediction markets are betting on the device’s form, with data from Kalshi showing over $134,000 wagered on the contract "What kind of device will Jony Ive and OpenAI announce?" Bettors give a "clip-on device for clothing" like a pin the highest probability at 18%, followed by "earbuds/headphones" at 13%, necklace and computers at 11% each, a phone at 7%, and glasses at 6%. Separately, Apple sued OpenAI on July 10 in federal court, accusing the company of using Apple’s trade secrets to accelerate its push into consumer devices, alleging that OpenAI’s chief hardware officer, Tang Tan, tried to extract confidential details from Apple employees. Apple has sent preservation notices to around 40 former Apple employees currently working at OpenAI. According to a report by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, OpenAI’s first hardware device could act as a home companion, allowing users to control appliances, play media, and respond to messages.
