Investor Bill Gurley drew a comparison, stating, “Old days: ‘Mistakes were made’; new days ‘Claude did illegal things’.” In his own reaction, Marcus called the situation “bad,” arguing that the supposed leaders in AI and AI safety are “clearly in over their heads” and that society is also “in over our heads.” He described the issue as stemming from “pattern0matching machines with no real comprehension of what they are doing” roaming the internet, and criticized the societal rush to build data centers and roll out AI without knowing how to control it, noting that “hope is not a strategy.” Marcus highlighted a key passage from the report indicating that human error at Anthropic allowed the pattern-matchers to roam the internet in the first place. The post also included a “skewering” from Joann Stern, formerly of the WSJ, and advice from Zack Korman of Embroidery.io, who told AI labs that a good security culture means taking every incident to heart, while a bad one involves saying “if we didn't catch it, who could have? This shows how hard this is.”
