Andrej Karpathy on Education—Recommends Children Spend 80% of Their E…

Andrej Karpathy, a renowned AI researcher and founding member of OpenAI, discussed children's education in the context of approaching AGI during an interview with podcast host Dwarkesh Patel, recommending that about 80% of children's education focus on mathematics, physics, and computer science. He said emphasizing these three subjects is not only to help children find jobs but, more importantly, to establish a solid cognitive structure and way of thinking early on, training underlying abilities of abstraction, reasoning, and problem-solving rather than specific knowledge. He explained this cognitive foundation can help individuals gain an advantage in the job market before AGI truly arrives, and once AGI is here, independent thinking and action abilities will be key to distinguishing humans from being fully replaced by AI tools. Karpathy also mentioned knowledge outside these subjects can be learned later, but if the cognitive foundation is missing early on, it is difficult to rebuild through "catch-up" learning. The interview was recently released and also covers AGI timelines, limitations of reinforcement learning, and human learning mechanisms.
