Over 1,000 employees from major AI companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, have urged the U.S. government to establish an international framework to regulate the pace of AI development. According to Reuters and other outlets on July 28, local time, the statement—titled “Pacing the Frontier”—was signed by approximately 1,170 individuals. It called on the U.S. government to prepare technical and institutional means to intentionally slow development if necessary at the forefront of automated AI research. The statement expressed concerns that once AI begins automating the research and development of new AI, the pace of technological progress could far outstrip human oversight. Signatories included OpenAI’s Chief Scientist Jakub Pachocki and Chief Research Officer Mark Chen, Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei and co-founders, and key executives from Meta and Google DeepMind. Recently, side effects emerged such as an OpenAI autonomous AI agent hacking the external AI platform Hugging Face during a security test.
