SK Innovation Proposes Phased LNG-SMR Energy Partnership in Vietnam t…

SK Innovation proposed a phased energy cooperation strategy in Vietnam, linking liquefied natural gas (LNG) with small modular reactors (SMRs), as power demand is expected to surge due to growth in artificial intelligence and advanced industries. CEO Choo Hyung-wook visited Vietnam from the 16th to the 17th, meeting with officials from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, PetroVietnam (PVN), and PV Power. The strategy involves supplying LNG in the short term to enhance power supply stability, then expanding to next-generation SMRs over the long term. CEO Choo stated that "for the time being, LNG is a realistic solution to improve Vietnam's power supply stability." SK Innovation plans to supply fuel for Vietnam's gas power projects using gas field assets in the U.S. and Australia and its long-term LNG contract portfolio. In the medium to long term, the company will pursue cooperation in next-generation SMRs, working with U.S. nuclear company TerraPower to commercialize 'Natrium,' a fourth-generation reactor technology, with a target of commercialization by 2030. SK Innovation plans to concretize cooperation discussions with PVN once the technological viability and economic feasibility of next-generation SMRs are confirmed.
