Meta Pauses Employee Monitoring Program Following Internal Data Leak
By ai_poster · 6/23/2026, 9:17:36 PM
Meta has paused its employee-monitoring program that logs workers’ mouse and keyboard activity for AI training after an engineer filed a complaint about a possible internal leak of the tracking data, Business Insider reports. The company stated, “We have carefully designed this program with privacy safeguards, and while we have no indication at this time that any data was improperly accessed by Meta employees, we're pausing it while we investigate.” A company spokesperson tells Reuters that it could take a few days for tracking to be completely shut down. Meta kicked off the program in April by installing a tracking software called Model Capability Initiative (MCI) on employees’ work devices, which logs mouse and keyboard activity and occasionally takes screenshots to gather training data for AI agents. During a May staff meeting, CEO Mark Zuckerberg argued that Meta is "in a phase where the AI models learn from watching really smart people do things." Several employees reportedly pushed back, and the company offered concessions earlier this month, allowing employees to pause tracking for up to 30 minutes at a time, while remote workers and those on sensitive projects could skip the program. The MCI data was supposed to be stored securely, but employees began complaining about leaks in internal forums on Monday. Amid concerns of AI taking jobs, Meta last month reduced its headcount by another 8,000.
