Big tech companies have repeatedly failed in healthcare, but a new health-oriented tool released this week by OpenAI, called ChatGPT Health, shows progress. A lawsuit filed two days earlier highlighted a major risk for such ventures. The author recalls serving on Google Health’s advisory board in 2007, which was disbanded after Google CEO Eric Schmidt said, “This is too hard for us.” In 2018, Amazon partnered with JPMorgan and Berkshire Hathaway to form Haven, which was shut down a few years later. IBM’s Watson Health, after its 2011 Jeopardy! win, was sold for parts in 2022, taking a multi-billion-dollar loss. Healthcare accounts for nearly 20 percent of U.S. GDP. In 2023, Amazon bought One Medical Group, which rolled out an AI tool for members. Google’s AMIE tool has demonstrated superiority over human clinicians in medical questions and perceived empathy. OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health this week, distinct from its tool for clinicians.
