In the new book *Regime Change: Inside the Imperial Presidency of Donald Trump*, New York Times reporters Maggie Haberman and Jonathan Swan described how tech giants scrambled to get on the president's good side after the 2024 election. The authors say that Trump belittled Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg at an event at Mar-a-Lago, showing Elon Musk text messages that he'd gotten from them. "Think of where these guys were in 2016," Trump is quoted as saying of Zuckerberg and Bezos. "They hated me. They were doing everything they could to knock me down. And look at them now." Musk appeared delighted by the humiliation, calling it "first-class groveling." White House spokesperson Kush Desai did not directly respond to the book. The book depicts Trump repeatedly mocking Zuckerberg and Bezos as they attempted to curry favor. When Zuckerberg paid a visit to Trump around Thanksgiving in 2024, the authors wrote that Trump played the national anthem over the speakers, a version performed by the J6 Prison Choir. The book also described Bezos telling Trump that it would be a national security threat to have a single contractor — Musk's SpaceX — to dominate America's space infrastructure, and suggesting "contractor diversity" to have Blue Origin compete with SpaceX.
