Amodei rejects open-weight AI ban, urges firm response to China risks

Dario Amodei, Anthropic's chief executive officer, clarified on July 27 that the company has never advocated banning open-weight AI models, stating that such models "that do not include dangerous capabilities are a public good." In a notice titled "Our position on open-weight models," Amodei emphasized that open-weight models themselves should not be banned but stressed the need for separate risk management for releasing cutting-edge, high-performance models, citing concerns that some countries could build more powerful AI models to "secure permanent military superiority." He argued that high-performance open-weight models pose greater risks than closed models due to difficulty applying safeguards. Amodei also urged a tough response to Chinese corporations' distillation of AI models, noting that "distillation alone will not give the Chinese Communist Party AI capabilities equal to or better than those of the United States, but it can raise China's AI proficiency to near U.S. levels within a matter of months." Earlier, major technology corporations including Nvidia, Microsoft, and Meta issued a joint letter urging the U.S. government not to expand regulation of open-weight AI models; OpenAI joined on the 25th, but Anthropic did not participate.
