CuspAI, a United Kingdom-based artificial intelligence startup specializing in advanced chip materials, has reached a valuation of $2.6 billion after attracting investment from Jeff Bezos, Nvidia and Meta. Founded in 2024 by Dr. Chad Edwards and Professor Max Welling in Cambridge, the company uses AI to discover new materials to improve next-generation computer chips. The startup secured $450 million in a Series B funding round on July 20, raising its total funding to more than $580 million. The round was co-led by Kleiner Perkins and NEA, with additional backing from Bezos Expeditions, AMD Ventures and the United Kingdom Government’s Sovereign AI Venture Fund. The funding is expected to accelerate research and expand work on advanced semiconductor materials. Demand for materials such as gallium, iridium and tantalum continues to rise as AI systems require more powerful chips and larger data centres, increasing prices and creating supply concerns. The International Energy Agency has warned that demand for gallium from data centres could exceed current global supply within the next four years. CuspAI originally focused on carbon capture and water purification before shifting research towards AI hardware, reflecting growing confidence that AI-driven materials research could play a key role in the semiconductor industry's future.
