Turn off this Meta setting before someone generates AI images of you

On July 7, Meta launched its AI image generation model, Muse Image, which integrates with public Instagram accounts. Anyone can generate AI images of a user by typing their Instagram handle into a prompt, and Meta’s policy states users will not be notified if someone does this. To opt out, users must go to Instagram Profile > Menu > Sharing and reuse and turn off the Posts and Reels toggles under “Allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta”; the feature is still rolling out, starting in the US. Opting out only prevents future image generation, and any AI images created before opting out remain in circulation. Switching an account to private is the only mechanism that comes close to comprehensive protection. Public Instagram photos were already being harvested by attackers to create deepfakes for identity verification fraud, and Muse Image lowers the barrier to generating synthetic images for impersonation, scams, or other abuse. Earlier this year, researchers disclosed a “confused deputy” flaw in Meta’s AI support chatbot that let it make account changes without adequately verifying who it was talking to; enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) appeared to mitigate that issue.
