Police in Parker, Colorado, released video footage of a Tesla driver being pulled over for traveling 64mph in a 45mph zone, with the driver claiming, “I wasn’t driving. I had Autopilot on.” The police response stated, “Driver assistance technology does not replace the driver,” adding that drivers remain “legally responsible for operating your vehicle safely” regardless of adaptive cruise control, lane centering, or full self-driving. The officer noted the driver was not the first person stopped with Autopilot activated. Separately, an Electrek writer documented receiving a speeding ticket while using Tesla’s Full Self-Driving; despite setting the system to Standard mode, the vehicle crept up to 78km/h in a 50km/h zone. Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving systems are designed to assist, not replace, the driver, and the law holds the driver responsible for reckless driving, speeding, or accidents. Tesla has designed FSD to drift over the limit even in Standard mode and removed the adjustable speed offset that previously let owners cap how far over the limit the vehicle would creep; Electrek reports this offset was removed in FSD v14 and replaced with fixed driving profiles. While some drivers may prefer systems that keep up with traffic, if Tesla’s systems keep landing drivers in trouble, many may stop using them.
