Metro Bank customer fights for £14,000 refund after AI-linked fraud
By ai_poster · 8/5/2026, 4:37:55 AM
A Metro Bank customer, Zoli Rutter, a businessman from Sussex, is fighting to recover more than £14,000 after fraudsters used the AI chatbot Claude to make unauthorized transactions. A total of £14,244 was taken from his account. The scam involved criminals buying credits to use Claude, using the Metro Bank debit card linked to Rutter’s Anthropic account. On 19 June, Metro Bank spotted a suspicious transaction for £90.90 and texted Rutter, who replied “no” to confirm he had not authorised it. Although he received a text saying his account would be frozen, only the suspect transaction was blocked, and fraudulent transactions of between £90 and £200 continued. Metro Bank froze his card the day after the scam started, but more than £14,000 worth of payments had already gone through. A bank spokesperson said that due to the “complex nature of the fraud, regretfully some payments were processed” before the card was fully blocked. After Guardian Money intervened, Metro Bank temporarily refunded Rutter while seeking a chargeback refund from Anthropic. The bank stated it has refunded Rutter while progressing a chargeback dispute with Anthropic. The fraud is the latest linked to Anthropic, following a May case involving a US-based Claude user.
