In a post on X this week, Elon Musk described the pace of artificial intelligence growth as a “supersonic tsunami,” sharing a chart that plots AI progress month by month. The chart covers a three-year window, from July 2023 through July 2026, and shows a line that barely moves for most of that span before bending sharply upward as 2026 begins. The chart’s low point is November 2024, a month labeled “it’s so over,” which marked a trough in AI enthusiasm after reports indicated that OpenAI’s next model, code-named Orion, delivered only modest gains over GPT-4. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman pushed back publicly, insisting there was no wall. Musk’s xAI has posted benchmark wins, with Grok 4.5 recently topping an independent agent benchmark run by Artificial Analysis, outperforming rival systems on both cost and speed. Musk has also said SpaceX engineering data will feed into Grok’s next training run, excluding material restricted under U.S. arms-export rules. Additionally, Musk recently reversed his stance on rival lab Anthropic, calling it “the current industry leader.”
