The situation sparked a standoff between LSU and the SEC, and Kiffin and LSU ultimately backed down and did not add the two players. Attorney Tom Mars, a friend of Kiffin, told ESPN that Kiffin relied on ChatGPT to justify how adding pro players would be okay, saying Kiffin would reply with screenshots from ChatGPT that supported LSU's position, "which was almost always wrong." Mars said he told Kiffin that "a guy with a $91 million contract ought to have a top-notch lawyer on speed dial and not be using ChatGPT for legal advice."
